Why More Americans Are Exploring Alternatives to Health Insurance | Becker's Healthcare Podcast

Why More Americans Are Exploring Alternatives to Health Insurance | Becker's Healthcare Podcast

Why are more Americans exploring alternatives to health insurance?

That’s the question Liberty HealthShare Chief Executive Officer Dorsey Morrow addressed during a recent appearance on the Becker’s Healthcare Podcast. In the episode, “Community Over Coverage: Why More Americans Are Opting Out of Health Insurance.”

Morrow joined Becker’s Healthcare’s Brian Zimmerman for a discussion on rising healthcare costs, consumer expectations, and the growing demand for healthcare solutions that offer greater transparency and control.

“Transparency is critical. I think we all need to expect that from whatever model we are utilizing.”
— Dorsey Morrow

During the conversation, Morrow highlighted the challenges many families face as premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses continue to increase.

“People are clearly paying high premiums now,” Morrow said. “And that's before you even talk about deductibles and the out-of-pocket costs before the coverage kicks in.”

The discussion also explored why consumers are taking a closer look at how healthcare is financed and why transparency has become increasingly important when evaluating healthcare options. Morrow shared how Liberty HealthShare helps members better understand healthcare costs and make informed decisions through open access to sharing guidelines, financial reports, and member resources.

The episode also touched on Liberty HealthShare’s recent growth. Morrow noted that the ministry has experienced 20 consecutive months of year-over-year enrollment growth, reflecting increased interest in healthcare sharing as an alternative to health insurance.

Looking ahead, Morrow emphasized three areas he believes are critical to improving healthcare affordability: transparency, consumer engagement, and prevention.

“The most affordable healthcare event is the one that never happens,” Morrow said. “Preventing a heart attack is just way better for everybody and less expensive than treating one.”
