Sometimes It Doesn't Make Sense

Sometimes It Doesn't Make Sense

He answered, "I do not know whether he is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see."

John 9:25 (NRSVUE)

Hopefully this doesn’t come as a shock to you. Neither I, nor you, nor anyone on Earth has all the answers. I’ll be the first to admit, it sure would be nice if someone did and could just tell me what to do! But as it stands, a lot of things just don’t make sense.

When Jesus healed the blind man in the Gospel of John, there were a lot of questions. First, the disciples wanted to know what sin caused the man to be blind, the Pharisees wanted to know how Jesus was doing what He was doing, and at the end of the chapter the man healed wanted to know who Jesus was so that he could believe in Him. That’s a lot of questions to pack into one text!

But the thing that sticks out to me in this story is verse 25. Peppered by questions from the religious authorities the man who was healed doesn’t have any of the answers that they’re asking for. He only knows one thing – he was blind, but he encountered Jesus and is blind no more.

There are so many uncertainties in life. There are answers that we simply don’t have. There are even times when I find myself asking, “Why save me, Lord? Aren’t others better than I?” But Jesus doesn’t ask for us to have all the answers, or to know everything. All Jesus asks of us is to trust, obey, and believe.

I don’t know much – all I know is that I once was blind, but, praise God, now I see.

Pray with me:

Lord, thank you for healing me of my blindness. Thank you for not asking me to have all the answers, but just to trust in you. Give me the strength to trust in you completely, knowing that you are my all in all. Amen.
