How Long Has Liberty HealthShare Been Around?

How Long Has Liberty HealthShare Been Around?

Liberty HealthShare has been serving members through healthcare sharing for over 30 years, with its origins dating back to 1995. The ministry began as the Gospel Light Mennonite Church Medical Aid Plan, created when five families from a small Mennonite church in rural Virginia came together to share medical expenses and support one another during times of need.

What started as a simple act of mutual aid among a handful of families has grown into one of America's most comprehensive healthcare sharing ministries, now serving members nationwide. The ministry's transformation reflects both its adaptability and its commitment to the founding principles of faith-based community support.

From Local Church Program to National Ministry

The ministry's growth accelerated following the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, when Gospel Light Mennonite Church leadership recognized an opportunity to extend their medical aid plan beyond their small congregation to serve Christians across the country. A pivotal moment came in 2014 when the ministry received federal recognition as an eligible healthcare sharing ministry, making members exempt from ACA insurance mandates and positioning the organization among a limited number of ministries to receive this federal acknowledgment.

Also in 2014, Liberty HealthShare—which had been establishing operations in Ohio—discovered aligned visions with the Medical Aid Plan. The Medical Aid Plan invited Liberty HealthShare members to join their sharing ministry and adopted the Liberty HealthShare name for broader national recognition. This strategic alignment facilitated the transition from a congregational program to a national ministry while preserving the faith-based community support that had defined its origins since 1995.

Continuity and Growth

The ministry's longevity is reflected in its membership retention, with many of the earliest Gospel Light Mennonite Church Medical Aid Plan members remaining with the ministry today, along with the first Liberty HealthShare members from 2014. This continuity demonstrates the enduring appeal of the healthcare sharing model and Liberty HealthShare's ability to maintain member trust across three decades.

As of 2025, Liberty HealthShare operates with a team of approximately 160 team members and has earned Charity Navigator's highest four-star rating for operational excellence and financial transparency. As Chief Executive Officer Dorsey Morrow noted when reflecting on the ministry's 30th anniversary, "God has certainly graced Liberty HealthShare with His blessings. He has presented us with some challenges over the years, but we continue to do His work by helping our members share the burdens of their fellow believers since 1995."
