Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because He raised Christ from the dead and gave Him great glory. You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart.
Coram Deo was one of the rallying cries of the sixteenth century Protestant Reformation. The two-word phrase means literally, “before the face of God.” The idea is that even though God’s face is not visible to us, every second of our lives is lived before His face. We cannot see Him, but He can see us. We need to cultivate a God-consciousness in which we realize that everything we do is done before the face of God.
When you accept Christ as your Savior and begin to follow Him, your life will take on a very different trajectory. Things you used to think were important will become less so. Instead of comparing yourself to the world and culture around you, you will find yourself comparing yourself to the scriptures that admonish and call us to godly things. They encourage us to turn from this world and to emulate Jesus Christ daily.
Why not work this Latin phrase into your life? Why not try today or this week to live consciously in the presence of God? The best way to practice this is to do what the scripture says at the beginning of this devotion. Show sincere love to those around you. Love each other deeply with all your heart. We love others, and even the seemingly unlovable, because Jesus loved us. He loved us while we were still sinners the Bible says, so we also must show the love of Jesus to others. Ask God to give you the capacity to love as you live out your life “before the face of God.”
