Former Things Shall Not Be Remembered

"For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind..." Isaiah 65:17 (ESV)

This past week, we celebrated the birth of Emmanuel, God with us. We observed traditions and spent time remembering Christmases past. Now, as the New Year approaches, we look forward to the year ahead.

It isn't always easy to view the days, weeks, and months ahead with eyes of anticipation and hope, especially if the days that came before were heavy and hard. However, God makes clear many times throughout scripture that He is doing new things in the world. The divide between the temporal and the eternal is lifted when we remember that God is bringing his kingdom to earth through us, His followers.

If you do not feel hopeful as you look ahead to 2018, consider that God has been and is creating a new heaven and earth, and you can join Him in that creative work. When your eyes are cast toward the future He is creating, you can more easily leave behind those "former things" that can only hinder and weigh you down.

Happy New Year.
